  • Brazil beats Chile in 2010 World Cup qualifier
    2008-09-08 14:47:10
¡¡  RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- In the seventh round of the 2010 World Cup qualifying tournament for the South American zone, Brazil beat Chile 3-0 to register its first away victory.

¡¡¡¡With Sunday's 3-0 victory, Brazilian coach Dunga and his team are back in the good grace of their fans and critics.

¡¡¡¡The game's first goal came in the 20th minute. On a stopped ball, Rolando crossed the ball into the middle of the goalie box. Luis Fabiano rose above the defense and headed the ball into the lower right side of the goal.

¡¡¡¡In the 35th minute of the first half, Brazil lost an excellent opportunity to score their second goal. Diego was taken down in the penalty box and was rightfully awarded a penalty kick.

¡¡¡¡The team's sharp shooter, Ronaldinho Gaucho, stepped up to face the Chilean goalkeeper. Ronaldinho fired the ball waist high and to the left side of the goal, however, the Chilean was able to get both hands on the ball and deflect it out of bounds.

¡¡¡¡Brazil's second goal of the first half came in the 44th minute. The team captain, Lucio, crossed the ball to Luis Fabiano, who then dished the ball off to a wide open Robinho who took his time and fired the ball into the upper left side of the goal.

¡¡¡¡The second half got off to a violent start. The Brazilian midfielder, Klebber, was expelled from the game after receiving his second yellow card in the 1st minute.

¡¡¡¡In total, there were six yellow cards and two red cards issued in the second half.

¡¡¡¡Brazil's third and final goal came in the 37th minute when Maicon crossed an excellent ball to Luis Fabiano on a fast break. Despite having three defenders around him, Luis Fabiano was able to deflect the ball off his chest and dominate the ball just before sending it in between the Chilean goalkeeper's legs.

¡¡¡¡Sunday night's victory gave the Brazilians three well deserved points. The team now has 12 points and has jumped to second place. Chile dropped to sixth place and has 10 points.

¡¡¡¡Brazil's next challenge will be from last placed Bolivia on Wednesday night in Rio de Janeiro at the Engenhao stadium.
